When I was in high school – and we won’t say how long ago that was! – my parents built a beach house in the beautiful Outer Banks.  The house served as a summer rental cottage until two years ago when my mother decided it was finally time to stop.  No more renters means an empty beach house calling my name on summer weekends.  It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it!

Every Friday night I load up the kids, the dog and surfboards for an hour and 45 minute drive to Corolla for a two day stay.  Going to a beach house every weekend is indeed a blessing, but it has its challenges as well.  Packing, meals, and hours in the car which has to be loaded and unloaded in the summer heat.  So how do we stay healthy during our weekly excursions?

The first health challenge I face is Friday night’s dinner.  It would be so easy to zip through a fast food joint for a quick meal on the go.  But that means loading the kids up with french fries, fatty burgers and soda.  Do they really need that every seven days?

My solution is to pack healthy sandwiches and snacks for our road trip picnic, as well as several bottles of chilled water.  And my water is the best of all, because it now contains an On the Go packet of Crystal Light Enhanced Metabolism+.  Imagine ice cold green tea and peach mango in place of a bottle of plain old water.  YUM.

I have to say that reviewing the new Crystal Light Enhanced line was no great chore.  On the contrary – the Metabolism+ is absolutely delicious.  The metabolism benefit is simply icing on the cake.  Since I am finally off of my weight loss plateau and am now in the “you have lost so much weight!” mode, I am happy to carry my single serve packets everywhere.

Another tip for staying healthy on the go?  Skip the convenience foods no matter how cheap they are and easy to pack.  Instead, head over to your local warehouse store and purchase a big tub of fresh fruit.  When we are away I keep a large container of cherries or strawberries on the counter for snacking.  Surprisingly, the kids go for the fruit over everything else, especially after a hot few hours on the beach.

beach strawberries

And speaking of the beach, remember to carry water with you as you travel.  Every night I pour a bit of water out of a new water bottle and place it in the freezer.  When I’m ready to head out the next day I refill the empty space and take my bottle along.  The heat slowly melts the ice, keeping my drink nice and cold.  Remember, reusable bottles are a green way to stay healthy too.

This past weekend brought a heat wave like no other.  We sat on the beach as the thermometer clocked 105 degrees.  Next to me?  My trusty bottle of water and Crystal Light To Go packet.

I always have water and healthy stuff to munch on so I don’t get so hungry I start craving a Big Mac. I carry carrot sticks, trail mix, bananas — things that will get me through to when I can get home and fixing a decent meal.

Pick me, pick me!!! I so need the $100 right about now. Back to school and all that nonsense – but at least we will be there another year!

Oh, wait – was there supposed to be a theme to my comment? It’s about how I love water. And I DO drink it all day long…

I’ve been living on those packets. I fill a 32-ounce bottle of water about 1/4 and then leave it on its side in the freezer so I end up with a vertical ice cube.

Once it’s frozen I fill it with water and add my Crystal Light. That way I have an icy cold drink for a couple of hours.

p.s. I love the Fruit Punch but I haven’t tried those flavored Pure Fitness/Energy concoctions. The combos seem interesting but I haven’t indulged yet. Have you tried the Cherry Pomegranate?

Hi, I used to drink crystal light years ago when it came in little tubs within a canister. Maybe I should give it another try. Thanks for the healthful and informative article. The beach shots are lovely, too.

I am one of those all or nothing kind of guy, meaning either I live totally healthy or I smoke cigs and eat all the wrong foods, ie Taco Bell etc,,

Well since I quit cigarettes using my electronic cigarettes to wean me off them I am back to healthy living and honest to God Crystal Light is always in my fridge when I don’t want just water. I would never think such a small amount of powder can make such a difference in the taste of a quart or more of plain water, but it does and it tastes great to boot.

Honestly I have no idea how many flavors CL comes in now, I stick to ice tea or strawberry. But I can vouch that it’s a great product and one I give an endorsement for. For what’s that’s worth :-)

So what do these Crystal Light packets actually do? Just add flavoring to the water?

I have chronic gastroparesis and live on a liquid diet. I love these Crystal Light packets to put in my water bottles! I live in the Virginia Beach area, so I know all about going to the beach, but my every day life is full of looking for different ways to have good tasting liquids and Crystal Light with it’s different flavors are wonderful! Enjoy the end of the summer….

It may not be the healthiest thing, but in the summer for cookouts and BBQ’s, my girlfriends and I like to put crystal light packets in our light beers. I’m not a big beer fan, but it makes it so tasty and it can keep down the calories and sugar we’d take in by drinking fancy cocktails with fruit juice in them. Try the pink lemonade..yum!

    Crystal Light…..Yum!
My main rule when I’m on the go is to eat half. Most restaraunts just give too much food for one serving size. You can stil enjoy eating good food while on vacation or on the run, just eat less of it and you will save tons of calories.

I always drink lots of water and the lemonade flavor Crystal Light is tasty. I try to walk instead of ride whenever possible, stairs not elevators in hotels and walk not drive to restaurants (weather/distance permitting). Just have to remember that you have to walk back. :-)

i haven’t heard of the metobolism ones. i love regular crystal light but never tried any other flavors. i haven’t done the single either because it seems like the water I pick up is never the right size so i worry about how it’ll taste.

Fresh fruit travels anywhere, and it’s a great snack. Nuts and cheese, along with a fresh loaf of bread and you have a whole meal that you can eat in the car without a big mess.

I always carry granola in my bag if I know I am gonna be away from my house for a while and I carry bottled water. When I am on the road I always choose the healthiest options at fast food places like the baked potato with only salt and pepper or some places have veggie burgers and I will eat those or a salad.

I stop at the grocery store as soon as I get into town and pick up some healthy food. I always get a room with at least a mini fridge and microwave. It helps my budget and waistline to cook a little in the room. :)

I try to pack a few snacks in my carry-on to take with me when we go somewhere. It saves us money and I’m eating better than grabbing an airport cookie when the munchies strike. Those Crystal Light packets would be great to pack in my suitcase. I like bottled water when we’re on the go but plain water can get boring really fast.

I stay hydrated by drinking half my body weight in ounces of water per day. Now, I can’t do all that with plain water. I flavor with Crystal Light…esp pink lemonadge. I also take some plain almonds with me for a quick protein boost.
