Because She Deserves The Very Best

This is a sponsored review by BlogHer and Purina.

Imagine being a puppy and finally finding a home.  But when you get there, things aren’t quite as you expected.  Your owners are moving their mouths but you can’t hear them.  They begin to look angry, and finally chain you in the back yard.  You try to chew your way out of the chain, breaking and losing some of your permanent teeth.  Finally, you are dragged to a scary building called “the pound,” and are labeled a “bad dog.”

That was my Emma, only a short while ago.  Fortunately, she was rescued from the pound in Georgia and was brought to Hampton Roads where I adopted her.  I had lost my 14-year-old Dalmatian a few months before and was ready to open my heart to a new dog in need.

Now I am the proud owner of a two-year-old deaf Dalmatian who is a joy, a challenge and a constant lesson in love, acceptance and patience.  No longer do I say, “No” to a dog just short of jumping on the counter.  Instead, I shake my finger in the “no” sign and hope she is catching my eye.  No longer do I say, “Sit” for a treat, but rather make a hand signal for sit while I stand directly in front of her.  And most importantly, “I love you” has changed from snuggles and words to snuggles and the sign, “I love you.”  She isn’t bad.  She isn’t stupid.  She simply can’t hear.

I have rescued two dogs in my life, both of which had previously lived in abusive homes.  When I look in to Emma’s eyes, I see a trust she gives me that she wasn’t able to give to anyone else.  I’m sure she tried over and over, only to suffer a fate that no dog deserves.

The rescue organization trusted me to give Emma a home she never had.  Emma trusts me to be patient with her disability and to find ways to communicate with her that are easy to understand.  Both have trusted me to keep Emma healthy, which includes regular veterinary care, plenty of love, exercise and nutritious food.  That is why I jumped at the chance to try Purina’s Pro Plan Selects dog food.

My first Dalmatian ate a Pro Plan food, so it only made sense to try the new Pro Plan Selects brand.  We chose the Natural Beef and Barley Formula, with the first ingredient being beef.  The Pro Plan Selects foods are natural and do not contain any corn, wheat, soy or artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.  They include barley and oatmeal for carbohydrates as well as whole eggs for protein and a healthy skin and coat.  It’s all good healthy food for good healthy dogs!

But would Emma like it?  We did a taste test!

There are benefits to having your dog on a healthy, natural dog food.  My dog now has softer fur and even more energy.  She stays at a good weight and enjoys mealtime immensely.  Emma has come a long way from that chained area in someone’s back yard.  I am proud to be the reason for that change.

How would you animal lovers like to win a $100 Visa Gift Card from Blogher? It would not only pay for a healthy bag of Pro Plan Selects Formula, but for dog accessories too – and perhaps some accessories for yourself!  Here are the rules:
